The Eagle Reef Project
Originating as an Eagle Scout service project by John Shell, the Eagle Reef Project has evolved into a significant environmental endeavor. Supported by Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) and the University of South Alabama’s Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences, the project involves deploying mini reefs beneath docks and piers across Mobile and Baldwin counties. These structures, once colonized by filter feeders like oysters and barnacles, can filter up to 20,000 gallons of water daily, improving water quality and providing habitats for marine life. Dauphin Island Causeway Shoreline Restoration
The Dauphin Island Causeway Shoreline Restoration Project is one of Alabama’s most significant coastal restoration efforts. Backed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, and the Alabama Port Authority, the project aims to protect the only access road to Dauphin Island from storm impacts and erosion.
